Eye of the Needle is a 1981 film directed by Richard Marquand, based on the novel of the same title by Ken Follett, and starring Donald Sutherland. The film is a World War II spy thriller about a German secret agent. The film impressed George Lucas so much he hired Marquand to direct .

Plot

In World War II England, master German spy Henry Faber (Donald Sutherland) learns a secret of supreme importance: the landing site chosen by the Allies for the invasion of Europe. He makes his way to a remote, sparsely inhabited Scottish island to rendezvous with a U-boat to take him to Germany, while the British authorities frantically search for him.
   While waiting, Faber becomes acquainted with an unhappy couple living on the island, Lucy (Kate Nelligan) and David Rose (Christopher Cazenove). David was a Royal Air Force pilot until he was crippled. He takes out his anger and bitterness on his wife. Lonely, Lucy allows Faber to seduce her. Later, David discovers that Faber isn't who he claims to be and tries to hold him for the authorities, but is killed. When Lucy finds his body, a deadly game of cat-and-mouse begins.
